Frequently Asked Questions

About Us:

General Questions:

  • A freight forwarder manages the end-to-end movement of your goods, from booking space with carriers to handling paperwork, customs, delivery, and problem-solving. They act as your logistics partner, making global shipping simple and stress-free.

  • You don’t legally need one, but most NZ businesses use a forwarder because importing involves documentation, duties, tariffs, MPI checks, and strict compliance. A forwarder prevents delays, extra fees, and costly mistakes.

What information do I need before I can get an import quote?

    You’ll typically need:

    Product details

    Supplier info

    Weight and dimensions

    Pickup location

    Final delivery address

Whether timing or cost is more important

(If you’re unsure, I can guide you through each step).

What is the difference between FCL and LCL?

FCL (Full Container Load): You hire an entire container — best for larger shipments.

LCL (Less-than-Container Load): You share container space — ideal for smaller or mixed shipments.

Both options are available for NZ imports and exports.

How long does sea freight take to New Zealand?

Timing depends on the origin, but typical transit times are:

    Australia: 5–10 days

    China: 18–30 days

    USA West Coast: 20–30 days

    Europe/UK: 40–55 days

(Tracey can recommend the best route and carrier for your timeframe.)

How long does air freight take to New Zealand?

  • All imports with a cost of goods at and over NZ$1000.00 are subject to GST and some items may be subject to duty. The current GST rate is 15% of the CIF value (cost of goods, freight and insurance). Some goods have an exemption such as personal effects and vehicles, but only under certain conditions. Contact Global Forwarding to find out more.

  • Depending on the type of goods you are shipping the documents will vary. You will however need a commercial invoice, a bill of lading or airway bill (issued by forwarder / airline or shipping line), container quarantine declaration for full containers.

  • That will depend on where it’s going to or coming from and what service has been chosen. If your timeline is crucial, get in touch today and we can look at different options available to you.
